Satras in Assam

- Satra Institution are established by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciples to spread the ideologies of the Eksarana Naam Dharma.
- Sankardeva established the first Satra at Bardowa or Batadrava in 1468 A.D. which was started as Naamghar.
- Satra is used for community prayers and Naamghar is used to stage dramatic performance and other cultural activities.
- According to the data available with Asom Sattra Mahasabha at present there are a total 862 Satra’s in Assam and West Bengal.
- Aauniati Satra –
- This Satra situated at Majuli.
- Established by Ahom King Jayaddhawj Singha in 1575-1576.
- The Deity established at the Satra is Govinda Thakur.
- It is famous for its ‘Paalnaam Mahostav’.
- Dakshinpaat Satra –
- This Satra was established at Majuli by Banamalidev.
- It is popular for its Raas festival organised in the full moon day of the Assamese month of Aghon every year.
- Garhmur –
- It is situated at the Kamalabari Mouza of Majuli.
- Founded by Lakshmikantadeva, this Satra received 30 thousand puras of land from Ahom King Siva Singha.
- Barpeta Satra or Kirtan Ghar –
- Madhavdeva established it in Barpeta.
- During the days of Madhavdeva, it was the epicentre of both religious and cultural activities in the area.
- Batadrava Satra –
- Sankardeva was born in Batadrava where he established the first Satra.
- It is situated at the modern Nagaon district.
- Sundardiya Satra –
- Madhavdeva established this Satra in Barpeta.
- King Siva Singha donated land to this Satra.
- It was a centre of Vaishnav religious and cultural activities.
- Madhupur Satra –
- Situated at Kochbihar, West Bengal.
- It was established by Srimanta Sankardeva.
- It is called “Dohmukutar than” or the living houses of the ten disciples of the Vaishnavite saint.
- Sankardeva’s life ended here.
- This Satra was established by the Great king Koch king Narayana.
- Govinda Ata was its first Adhikaar.
- Kamalabari Satra –
- Founded by Badula Padma Ata.
- Samaguri Satra –
- It is famous for its mask-making tradition.
- It belongs to the Purush Sanghai established by Purusottam Thakur.
